Are You Looking For Therapy Because You Were Recently Charged With Domestic Violence?

Are you accused of escalating a domestic conflict, leading to a domestic assault charge?  Are you currently worried that you’ll:

Face a criminal charge?
Have your immigration or employment status affected?
Be unable to meet court requirements?

Maybe your lawyer has encouraged you to seek counselling to help your case. Perhaps you already finished another program elsewhere, but it did not meet court requirements.

If this is the case, we encourage you not to lose hope. At Atia Counselling Centre, our therapists specialize in providing court-recognized therapy for clients facing domestic violence charges. Our Domestic Violence Counselling Program is a more condensed and effective alternative to traditional Partner Assault Response (PAR) programs. All our clients and their legal professionals use our services with confidence and are met with great success in the courts—we’re confident that you will find success, too.

What Are The Benefits Of Our Domestic Violence Therapy Program?

We have been offering our Domestic Violence Therapy Program since 2008 and have an excellent reputation in courts throughout Ontario. Very few private clinics offer counselling for people facing criminal charges, and as such, many people don’t get access to the quality care they need. We pride ourselves on our ability to provide the right program and court-recognized report for each client.

Some of the benefits of our program are listed below:

  • Court-recognized and approved
  • Solution-focused approach
  • Non-judgmental, conversational approach
  • Evidence-based
  • Delivered by registered psychotherapists and social workers
  • Tailored to your specific needs and goals
  • 100-percent virtual and available to all Ontario residents

What Should I Expect In Court-Recognized Domestic Violence Counselling?

online therapy session

Our Domestic Violence Therapy Program is a court-approved program for people who have been accused of violence and abusive behaviour towards their partners and have been charged with Domestic Assault. The program is twelve sessions and six weeks long (two sessions per week) and each session is 50 minutes. It is private and one-on-one.

During the sessions, you can expect to be treated with respect and provided with quality, non-judgemental care. We see you as a whole person and we tailor the therapy process to suit your individual needs and goals. You can expect to walk away with new skills and insights, as well as less stress and more hope for a better life.At the end of the program, you will be given a two-page comprehensive report (not just a simple certificate/letter of completion), which is highly regarded in the courts. The court-recognized report will document your therapy progress and achievements and help your lawyer create a strong defense.

How will this program help me?

Our program is evidence-based, person-centered, and uses the Duluth Model of Treatment, as per Ontario Domestic Violence Court standards. It focuses on accountability for abusive behaviour, examining what might have contributed to the incident and helping you develop new skills to reduce the chances of reoffending.

Some of the main takeaways include:

  • Increasing your understanding of domestic violence and abuse
  • Learning how beliefs and attitudes affect behaviours
  • Examining the effects of abuse on partners, children and yourself
  • Understanding warning signs, triggers, and how to de-escalate
  • Developing greater anger management skills
  • Exploring the principles for building healthy relationships and partnerships
  • Developing respectful communication skills, especially during conflict
  • Reducing the likelihood of re-offending by increasing your awareness of personal triggers, feelings, and the warning signs that contribute to violent behaviour

By the end of the program, you will gain the insights and skills to approach life with better mental health and engage in relationships with more compassion and understanding.

Why Should I Choose Atia Counselling For Domestic Violence Therapy?

Listed below are some of the main factors that make us stand out from our competitors:

  1. Better than standard PAR Programs
Other PAR programs often take longer to complete, are inflexible and strict with regards to dates, timing, and missed sessions, and make accessibility and learning outcomes difficult. Here’s what you can expect from our program:
    • Immediate availability
    • One-on-one and private (no groups or workshops)
    • Focused on you, giving you the ability to gain deeper insights
    • Timely completion: 12 sessions are completed in one to two months (other PAR programs are 24 sessions long and often take six months to complete). Please note that, although our program is shorter, it covers all necessary topics and is more in-depth than most programs, since it’s one-on-one.
    • Comprehensive and individualized one-to-two page court-recognized report
  2. Reputable and Court Approved—We have a strong reputation with lawyers, paralegals, and crown attorneys that we’ve built since 2008. We provide effective, evidence-based therapy to clients and create solid reports to support the work they’ve accomplished.
  3. Knowledgeable and Experienced—All our therapists are registered psychotherapists and social workers who are specially trained in our counselling programs. We are all committed to providing excellent and non-judgemental care.
